Finding Strength Through Vulnerability: Carly Pearce's Honest Journey
Hello everybody. It is I, skip Clark, along with Marissa, from Middays and we are in a trailer backstage at the Great New York State Fair Suburban Park and I am with the one and only and absolutely beautiful lovely love her, seen her a few times in concert. It's Carly Pierce. Carly, I want to say welcome to the Great New York State Fair. Thank you, I'm so happy to be here. So tell us a little bit about what is going on in the world of Carly Pierce right now.
Speaker 2:Oh gosh, Well, so many things. That I can't tell you is what's going on. I'm trying. Let's see, we're winding down the summer, which you know. I think everybody gets to the point where they're excited to maybe tour a little less coming up in the next few months. But I've been hard at work at some things, lots of things.
Speaker 1:Stuff. You can't tell us no. So I guess what you're saying indirectly, Marissa, I think what I mean, there could be something new in Bruin.
Speaker 3:That's what I'm guessing from this.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I have the feeling.
Speaker 3:She's not going to confirm or deny.
Speaker 1:I have the feeling radio is going to find out pretty quick.
Speaker 2:Yeah, there's a lot of new. We'll just say, like new is happening.
Speaker 1:Okay, can we just go back? What was the turning point in your career when you you started? What 2017? And then, of course, covid. Yeah, and then let's go from there. What was the turning point for you?
Speaker 2:I mean really COVID. I feel like I was one of the only artists that really my career took off during COVID Probably 29,. My album, which is ironic because I feel like it was written about such like a dark thing in my life and it became truly the best thing that probably ever happened to me and just really solidified like a human relationship with fans. I feel like they realized, oh, she's just like us going through the same things.
Speaker 3:That's what I was gonna say. Like when you have, when you, when you go through stuff like that and you're basically releasing your diary, that is where you become the most relatable and all of a sudden it's it's not. This is Carly Pierce on stage. This is Carly Pierce, the girl that's shopping next to me in the grocery store.
Speaker 2:Exactly which is me.
Speaker 3:If I bumped into you, though, it would be a totally different situation in Target or something. You know what I mean? Oh my God, that's Carly Pierce. You're not supposed to be here.
Speaker 1:Exactly so. I mean you kind of put your life out there, and we all know that you know. I mean, do you you kind of put your life out there, and we all know that you know? I mean we read about you, it's in our show prep, it's, you know, reading about the new music that's coming out and your ups and downs, and I mean, do you ever regret?
Speaker 2:letting a lot of that out. I mean, I would be lying to you if it hasn't been like a journey of getting to a place where I don't care what other people think. I definitely there's been pros and cons to it. You know, people feel like they know exactly what happened to me. They feel like, oh, all she does is sing about heartbreak or she can't keep a man, or all these different things, and it's like that's just not reality and I think I'm finally at a place where I'm like I don't really care. Whatever keeps making people show up and care. Yes, I'm going to keep writing music that makes me feel things and, like you know, sorry that I went through a situation that didn't serve me and I got out of it.
Speaker 3:Follow the Taylor Swift playbook.
Speaker 1:Okay, Because that's.
Speaker 3:I'm just saying it's out there and it's working for her Totally, so it's going to work for you too.
Speaker 2:I feel good about it.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and you should, because I believe, from a male standpoint, that everything you've been through has even made you a better person. You have learned how to accept certain things and the ups, the downs, and it's like screw everything else. I am me. If you don't like me, too bad.
Speaker 2:Totally. I feel that I feel like you have to. You only get one shot at this life in general and it's like I want to try to live the best that I can.
Speaker 1:You've done a lot of collaborations, a lot of duets. Is there somebody that you haven't done one with as of yet that you would like to get going, cody?
Speaker 2:Johnson.
Speaker 1:Bam.
Speaker 3:I'm just, I don't. She's not. Is this an Easter egg? No, it's actually not.
Speaker 2:If I was going to give you an Easter egg, it would be Russell Dickerson. Okay, fine.
Speaker 3:I was just it, just it felt like a moment. That's, that's all I'm getting at. You know, cody and I I know I'm just saying that not not like you together you the new Stuff you can't tell us about yet.
Speaker 1:Oh yeah, I mean there's some things in there that, but All right, we just went back a page, okay.
Speaker 2:I would like Cody though if he's looking for his next situation.
Speaker 1:I think that would be awesome. He's so good. Kojo is so good.
Speaker 2:He's so good, so good.
Speaker 1:You know, is there a song of yours that fans love, but you never expected to connect, connect with them so deeply.
Speaker 2:I mean truly what he didn't do. I really didn't. I wrote that and I remember kind of being like I don't know if I can put this out into the world and I just sang it at a writer's round during COVID times and it like blew up overnight. Yeah, I just I never thought it's so personal to me. I just never thought anybody would care.
Speaker 1:Wow, what is it like to be Carly Pierce A day in your life? I'd say you're back home in Nashville. Just a day in your life, what is it like.
Speaker 2:It's pretty boring. I'm pretty average, I have to tell you, Like I don't, I'm going to like a workout class in Nashville where nobody cares if I'm there or not. It's awesome. I go to the grocery store, I hang out with friends in my neighborhood, I go for a run, cook dinner at my house, Like I'm pretty ordinary.
Speaker 1:All right. Got to ask what's your favorite thing to cook.
Speaker 2:Ooh, I make really good steak.
Speaker 1:You make steak.
Speaker 2:Yeah, like I do it, you know. Pan seared in the cast iron and then put it in the oven. Let yeah, like I do it, you know pan seared in the cast iron and then put it in the oven.
Speaker 3:Marissa, I don't cook. No, I at one point was like cooking up storm and then and then it just it fell off and you don't want anything from me right now. It's like chicken tenders out of the air fryer. Let's go. Hey, that's cooking.
Speaker 1:You know. First of all, thank you for your time. I know we got to wrap it up here pretty quick.
Speaker 2:But if you weren't a country artist, if you weren't the person who you are today, what do you think you would be doing? I could ask that a lot and truly. From the time I was like five, this is what I wanted to do. However, there was like one day where I kind of thought maybe I would be a vet, but then I figured out that vets have to deal with sick animals and I couldn't do that. But I really love, like health and nutrition, so something maybe in like I don't know something in that.
Speaker 1:Yeah, something like that. Do you have pets?
Speaker 2:I do Johnny and June, my two dogs.
Speaker 1:That's right, I should have known, yeah yeah, johnny, how old are they and what are they?
Speaker 2:They're five, they're twins and they're Shih Tzus. Be careful, more Shih Tzu.
Speaker 1:But they're a lot of fun. Now can I ask do you bring them on the tour bus?
Speaker 2:You know, here's the deal with them. I don't know what happened, but when I told you I've maintained my ordinary life, they've gotten cocky. So in the beginning they used to be awesome and now they bite people and they're really aggressive and they kind of suck. So they're very good to me, but they are divas and a half. They tried to bite Tim McGraw.
Speaker 1:Oh, that's not good.
Speaker 2:They've bitten some of my band members so they stay at home.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and when you don't want them around, you bring the dogs out.
Speaker 2:Exactly, exactly, but they're perfect, but they're bad.
Speaker 3:Marissa, you got anything else you'd like to add? Well, I wanted to ask how is the hand injury? Oh, a ranch huh Bottle of ranch.
Speaker 2:I know, you know what's funny. So I got the two stitches. Obviously, like on the internet, people were saying I was rushed to the hospital. I'm like, okay, no, I wasn't, it's the internet, Come on.
Speaker 1:you're on your deathbed.
Speaker 2:But I will say it still hurts.
Speaker 3:Like when I go to open a bottle, I'm like ow, Well, you're probably near a tendon or something.
Speaker 2:It definitely was, but it's healing up. It's crazy.
Speaker 3:That was only like two weeks ago, but see like so relatable, because I am also incredibly accident prone, so it was not good, but look she good, she fine.
Speaker 1:It's awesome. You look great, Han looks great. I think we're in for a great show tonight. I know we are right. I mean, here you are at the great New York State Fair and going to a baby calf be born. We just saw them.
Speaker 2:Yeah, we were just there. I didn't see it be born, but I saw the stuff that comes out after yeah, I know, we saw that too.
Speaker 3:It was pretty traumatizing.
Speaker 1:We don't talk about that.
Speaker 2:Well, here I am. That's what I saw today. That's memorable. Have you ever?
Speaker 1:seen something like that before.
Speaker 2:You know I can't say that I have, so you're this is like Vegas.
Speaker 3:What happens?
Speaker 2:at the fair stays at the fair.
Speaker 1:I just couldn't believe. You'll never forget.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I couldn't believe that big of a baby came out of that cow. I was like, wow, that's huge.
Speaker 1:It's like what's your baby weigh? It's 110 pounds.
Speaker 2:It's like holy crap.
Speaker 1:It was big. It was big. All right, it's Carly Pierce. Thank you again for to the stage and we're just so excited about that. And you've had four number one hits. I know we're going to hear all those tonight and maybe some new ones.
Speaker 2:Not any new ones, but I'm just saving it.
Speaker 1:You're going to get it, you are really keeping all this a secret. Marissa, you notice how I'm trying.
Speaker 3:I know you're trying, it's fine.
Speaker 2:I know I can't make your dreams come true yet.
Speaker 1:Not yet. Just gave you a hint, that's.
Speaker 2:Easter egg.
Speaker 3:I see, I'm telling you, it is it is All right, it's Carly Pierce.
Speaker 1:Thank you so much for being here. On behalf of the Wolf, thank you for taking the time and your team to give us permission to come up here and talk to you. You're the best. It's artists like you that make us so great. If we didn't have your music, I don't know where we would be to be honest with you.
Speaker 2:Oh, that's really nice, thank you it's radio, it's what we do yeah, I'm gonna cry oh that's so nice.
Speaker 3:He's an emotional guy, so watch out. Oh, that's so nice.
Speaker 2:I very much remember my radio tour and it's definitely not lost on me. That's why I get to do this awesome yeah, thank you.
